Far West Rand Gold Field
The Far West Rand has produced an estimated 349 million troy ounces of gold since mining operations began in 1939. This makes it the largest producer of gold amongst the seven gold fields. The main visual shows the gold sphere occupying the memorial site of sinkhole disaster that claimed the lives of a family and their domestic worker when it collapsed under their home one night in 1964. Sinkholes are common in the area and are often attributed to mining activities.
